The Solution The Lorient solution is to fit a seal system which, properly located and secured, prevents the passage of cold smoke, fire and hot smoke, and sound. Such a system would typically comprise:
• Intumescent Seals fitted to the top and sides of a door. In the event of fire intumescent seals expand to 5 - 10 times their original size sealing the gaps around the door and providing an effective barrier to fire and hot smoke. • Cold Smoke Seals which seal the gaps around the door - including the threshold - when the door is closed. They provide a permanent barrier to the passage of cold smoke and also provide useful thermal or acoustic insulation.
DS Acoustic, Smoke and Fire Seal Three seals in one – the complete solution for acoustic, smoke and fire containment. A range of popular sizes to cover both 30 and 60 minute applications. Proven acoustic performance - tested in accordance with BS EN ISO 140-3: 1995 , and proven to meet the requirements of Approved Document E . Finesse™ Acoustic, Smoke and Fire Seal These exceptional seals combine performance and durability with superior aesthetics. A choice of sizes to cover both 30 and 60 minute applications Successfully tested for fire and smoke performance in accordance with both BS 476 Pt 20/22 , and also BS EN 1634-1:2000 Proven acoustic performance - tested in accordance with BS EN ISO 140-3: 1995. Other Smoke and Fire Seal Profiles In addition to the DS and Finesse seal profiles, we also offer fire seal only products, other fin-type seals (TS and AS seal profiles), and brush-type seals (SS seal profiles) in a range of sizes.

Heat from a fire causes the intumescent material to foam and swell, thus filling the gap between the door and frame and preventing the flow of hot gases and smoke. However, not all such seals are equal, and as concern over litigation grows, the thoughtful specifier must examine all the options to ensure that the seal chosen for each project really is the most appropriate. As the recognised leader in intumescent seal technology, Sealmaster offers products of proven performance and demonstrable cost-effectiveness, which can be specified with absolute confidence.

The PVC casings contain an expandable graphite-based intumescent compound which unlike some products, is unaffected by moisture in the air and so does not require to be carefully protected when fitted. Because the expandable graphite in Intumescent Seals produces a voluminous foam to fill the door leaf to frame gaps and those between door leaves in double door assemblies under relatively high pressure, it helps to stabilise fire door assemblies as they move under increasing heat. This makes Intumescent Seals especially suitable for use at the head of unlatched fire doors and in double door assemblies.
